When Canadians place a bet on a hockey game, a CFL matchup, or the Stanley Cup playoffs, many dream of the big win — the underdog victory, the last-minute comeback, the small wager that turns into a huge payout. But behind that excitement lies a psychological pattern: we tend to overestimate the likelihood of rare events. In sports betting, that means we often give too much weight to spectacular outcomes and too little to the probable ones. Why does this happen — and how can we become more aware of it?

Our Brains Love Stories, Not Statistics

Humans are not naturally wired to think in probabilities. We understand the world through stories, not numbers. When a lower-ranked team beats a powerhouse like the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, it becomes a story we remember and retell. It sticks in our minds as proof that “anything can happen.”

The problem is that our brains use these stories as shortcuts when judging risk. We overestimate how often the unlikely actually occurs because we can easily recall the few times it did. Psychologists call this the availability bias — the easier something is to remember, the more likely we think it is.

Media Amplifies the Illusion

Sports media and social media play a major role in reinforcing our focus on rare events. A shocking upset gets massive coverage, while the many expected wins pass quietly. When we’re constantly exposed to surprises, we start to believe they happen far more often than they really do.

Bookmakers understand this perfectly. They know that many bettors are drawn to long odds because they represent the dream of the improbable. That’s why they can offer slightly lower payouts on popular “long shots” and still attract plenty of bets.

Emotion Beats Logic

Sports betting isn’t just about numbers — it’s about emotion. When we bet, we’re influenced by hope, excitement, and the desire to be right. Rare events — like an outsider winning a major tournament — trigger strong emotions because they defy expectations. That makes them more appealing, even when we rationally know the odds are slim.

We also tend to overestimate our own ability to “spot something others don’t.” We convince ourselves we’ve found hidden value in an unlikely outcome, when in reality, it’s often just randomness at play.

The Mathematical Reality

In truth, sports results are rarely as unpredictable as they feel. Favorites win more often than we think, and major upsets make up only a small fraction of games. Statistics show that if you consistently bet on high odds without considering value, you’ll lose more in the long run than if you focus on likely outcomes.

That doesn’t mean you should never back an underdog — but you should do it based on a realistic assessment of probability, not the thrill of chasing a jackpot.

How to Avoid the Trap

Becoming aware of your own thinking is the first step toward better decisions. Here are some ways to counter the tendency to overestimate rare events:

  • Think in probabilities, not stories. Ask yourself: “How often does this really happen?”
  • Track your bets. Keeping records gives you a clearer picture of what actually pays off.
  • Be cautious with long odds. They look tempting, but they usually reflect low probability.
  • Don’t let emotions drive your bets. Passion for a team or player isn’t the same as value.
  • Seek information, not confirmation. Read analyses that challenge your assumptions, not just those that agree with them.

When Reason Meets Excitement

Sports betting will always involve a mix of thrill and uncertainty — and that’s part of the fun. But if you want to bet smartly, it helps to understand your own mental pitfalls. Overestimating rare events is human, but it’s also one of the most common reasons bettors lose money.

By combining the excitement of sports with a realistic grasp of probability, you can keep the enjoyment alive while improving your chances of betting responsibly — and maybe even a little wiser than the average fan.
